Who Should Join CPRS

Preventing attempts to mandate Social Security coverage is an ongoing effort that requires the active participation of every individual and organization that could be adversely affected by such a mandate. All organizations that oppose unfunded federal mandates that threaten essential public services should join CPRS, including:

  • Public Employee Retirement Systems
  • Retirement System Associations
  • National, State and Local Public Employer Organizations
  • National, State and Local Public Retiree Organizations
  • National, State and Local Public Employee Unions and Associations
Why CPRS?

The Coalition to Preserve Retirement Security (CPRS) is the leading voice and preeminent organization in Washington, D.C., dedicated to opposing efforts to force public employers and their workers to participate in the Social Security program. Our mission is to protect the current structure of public sector retirement plans. In addition, CPRS has advocated reform of the government pension offset (GPO), which unfairly punishes public employees covered by a public system who are also be entitled to Social Security benefits.

What's At Stake?

Over the years, influential people from the White House, Congress, Washington, D.C. think tanks and even the largest senior citizen membership organization have decided that public employees should be forced to join Social Security. Forced, whether or not their current retirement plan is better. Forced, ignoring the fact that for many public sector workers, Social Security means retirement insecurity.

Now, more than ever, when the Social Security program is facing budget shortfalls and decision-makers from President Bush on down are looking for new funding sources, mandatory coverage is seen as an easy source of new money. Without CPRS on the frontlines, mandatory coverage will continue to be considered a possible funding solution regardless of its impact on public employers, their workers and retirees.
